GAME OF THE WEEK: Vicksburg vs. Holmes County
Our game of the week featured Vicksburg hosting the Holmes County Jaguars, with both teams eyeing a 1-0 start to the season.
The Jaguars came out swinging early with a quick slant from Garrison Davis to Julius Mathis, who did the rest to find himself in the end zone for the first points on the board.
Holmes County was not done after that. Davis found his man, Jartavious Smart, who slipped during his route, but that did not stop him from making a tough catch and breaking some tackles, leading to a footrace to the end zone, giving the Jaguars the early two-score lead.
The Gators had no quit as they nearly found a big play from running back DeCorey Knight, but one shoelace tackle saved the day for the Jaguars.
However, they still could not find the end zone.
Finally, the Gators’ defense stepped up with a big deflected pass, leading to an interception by Deztin Minor, which led to a field goal.
Despite their efforts, the Gators continued to struggle to find their way into the end zone.
Holmes County held a 13-6 lead over Vicksburg in the 4th quarter.
**Final Score:** Holmes County 20, Vicksburg 6.
Warren Central vs. Clinton
We stay in Vicksburg for Year 18 of Josh Morgan at Warren Central and Year One for John Carr at Clinton.
Josef Walker scrambled around in the backfield and got away from the sack but couldn’t escape Gavin Davenport, who spun him down on third down.
The Arrows would punt.
The Vikings then went on offense and displayed some trickery!
Nash Morgan handed off to Aden Greer, who flipped to Maddox Lynch, leaving Morgan wide open. He walked into the end zone.
The Arrows answered at the goal line. The ball was in there somewhere, and eventually, Jakobe Williams crossed the goal line for the score. The extra point was no good, making it 7-6 at that point.
**Final Score:** Warren Central 20, Clinton 26.
Pearl vs. Neshoba Central
Over in Pearl, first-year Pirates head coach Patrick Schooler went head-to-head with his former team.
The Pearl Pirates, at home tonight, hosted Neshoba Central.
The Pirates came out of the gate swinging. Dylan Story took the snap and sent it deep into the hands of a wide-open Kingi McNair.
With nobody in front of him, he took it straight in for the touchdown, and the Pirates got on the board first, 6-0.
Later on, Pearl led 12-0, and if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Pearl went back through the air later in the second quarter.
Story stepped back and sent it to Marquell Lake, who made the catch and walked it into the end zone.
It wasn’t until the last few seconds before the half that Neshoba Central got on the board.
Will Williams went right and sent it to the end zone, where Jalyas Winters made the diving catch.
**Final Score:** Pearl 26, Neshoba Central 20.
Germantown vs. Northwest Rankin
Germantown hosted Northwest Rankin. It was going to be the Mavericks on the board first.
King White threw a dart to Keyshaun Coleman, who despite solid coverage, scored a TD for Germantown.
The Cougars tried to answer, moving the ball downfield. Mickell Smith passed to De’Shawn Dillon, and Northwest Rankin got to around midfield.
Then, the snap was high over Smith’s head! Germantown got possession, and Banks Polk fell on it for the Mavs.
**Final Score:** Germantown 46, Northwest Rankin 21.
Jackson Prep vs. ACCS
Jackson Prep hosted ACCS, with Prep trying to make plays early.
Billy Puckett stepped back and found J.E. Maddux at the edge of the end zone for a touchdown.
Coleman Carter took his time and found Riley Roach for a gain of 4 yards.
Sean Kerry Cothern slowed down Jackson Prep’s momentum when he brought down T.H. Oswalt.
On the next play, Parker Puckett decided to keep it, this time for a touchdown.
Billy Puckett sent it up as he blurred Adams Christin’s attempt to stop Gardner Young from scoring a touchdown.
**Final Score:** Jackson Prep 37, ACCS 7.
Hartfield vs. Simpson Academy
Hartfield Academy looked to keep things rolling, hosting Simpson Academy.
Cayman Tapper connected with Kenzy West for a first down.
Tapper then found Bralan Womack for a touchdown, making it 7-0.
Tapper to Womack again, and it was 21-0 Hartfield.
**Final Score:** Hartfield Academy 49, Simpson Academy 0.
Madison Central vs. Ocean Springs
As the Greyhounds welcomed Madison Central, we picked up just before halftime, with the Greyhounds up 13-0.
The Jaguars were on offense.
As the handoff went to Glen Singleton, the senior running back found paydirt for the first time this season, cutting the lead to 6.
After halftime, Madison Central picked up where they left off.
Singleton, again with the handoff, went to his right, made one miss, and was off to the end zone.
It was 43 yards for the score. For Singleton, his third touchdown of the game gave the Jags a 20-13 lead.
**Final Score:** Madison Central 27, Greyhounds 20.
Brandon vs. Picayune
Staying on the coast, Brandon traveled to play Picayune.
Sophom*ore Sladen Shack got his first start and made a pretty toss to fellow sophom*ore Tyson Robinson.
Robinson bobbled it but held on, and then there was no one between him and six points.
Then Shack, on the screen pass to Quincy Phillips Jr., let a defender go by and ran around the defense to score.
Robinson then got it on the handoff, powering through the tackle for the touchdown.
However, the Bulldogs were not done there.
The defense got involved as Trey McQueen jumped the route and took it for a house call.
**Final Score:** Brandon 60, Picayune 34.
