Covid-19 Maui County Schedule Changes (2024)

The Maui News has compiled a list of countywide cancellations, closures and postponements due to coronavirus. This story is updated daily as information is released. Last updated at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Public Facilities

• Most county fields and parks reopen. More than 119 inland and beach parks currently are open for exercise and sunbathing, including Kanaha Beach Park. County community centers and gyms remain closed.

• All county pools reopen with the exception of Kokua Pool. Reservations required, limited activities.

• Most county offices still closed until further notice. DMVL open for limited service.

* Hana Highway to Hana and Piilani Highway around the backside of Haleakala through Kaupo open to local traffic only.

* Kahekili Highway from Waihee to Kahakuloa open to local traffic only.

* Maui County Immigrant Services Division offices on Maui, Molokai and Lanai suspending walk-in services and inquiries. All services provided by appointment only. In-person contact replaced by telephone appointments and emails for general information, questions or status requests. To schedule an appointment, call 270-7791, Wailuku; (808) 553-5072, Molokai; (808) 565-6679.

* All state parks closed, except for Makena State Park (bathrooms and parking lot closed) and Polipoli Spring State Recreational Area and Palaau State Park on Molokai for day use.

• State Department of Land and Natural Resources division office closures to in-person visits include the divisions of Conservation and Resources Enforcement; Forestry and Wildlife; Land; Parks. The Division of Boating and Recreation offices statewide reopen with social distancing rules

• State public libraries. All programs and events, external meetings scheduled in library meeting rooms and Bookmobile services canceled. Libraries are closed but book drops are now open. The public can use Library Take-Out by going online, placing a hold on items and scheduling an appointment for pickup.

• UH-Maui College campus is closed.

• Haleakala National Park Summit District open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily with limited access to attractions. Kipahulu District, crater, backcountry trails closed. No sunrise access.

* Public school facilities closed.

Nonprofits and other organizations

• Maui Arts & Cultural Center closed with limited activities. Diana Ross concert canceled; Henry Kapono and Paula Fuga, Kapono and Keola Beamer, Jake Shimabukuro, and Daryl Hall and John Oates concerts rescheduled.

* The Nisei Veterans Memorial Center’s Education Center closed.

* Lahaina Restoration Foundation Baldwin Home Museum, Wo Hing Museum and Cookhouse, Hale Pa’i Printing Museum closed. Activities and classes also canceled.

* Maui Nui Botanical Garden in Wailuku closed until further notice.

* Youth programs, including Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui, Kihei Youth Center, Paia Youth and Cultural Center, Hana Youth Center, Molokai Youth Center, Lanai Youth Center, closed.

* Hawaiian Electric office payment centers temporarily closed. Customers are encouraged to mail payment; use or sign up for online bill payment; use Speedpay, an authorized payment service provider that allows customers to pay by phone or online (convenience fee applies); use Western Union payment locations if payment must be made in person.

* Kaho’olawe Island Reserve Commission Wailuku offices closed. Trolling permits only accepted by mail, 811 Kolu St., Suite 201, Wailuku 96793. Boat stickers and permits will be mailed to applicants.

* Kaiser Permanente Kihei clinic closed. The Maui Lani, Lahaina and Wailuku offices open; Maui Lani clinic open for after-hours care.

* Maui AIDS Foundation temporary office hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday to Thursday, appointments required for office visits. All testing services suspended; case management services for people living with HIV provided by appointment only; PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) services and intakes available via telehealth; in-person group and educational sessions suspended and offered in virtual form where appropriate.

* Maui Humane Society closed until further notice. Spay and neuter services temporarily suspended for all owned animal and community (feral) cats. Previously scheduled appointments have been canceled and will be waitlisted for a future appointment once the clinic reopens. Limited services including adoptions are by appointment only. To view adoptable animals, visit mauihumanesociety.org and then call 877-3680, ext. 3, between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to make an appointment. Humane enforcement is available 24 hours a day for emergencies only. Visit Humane Society website for COVID-19 updates.

* Maui Historical Society/ Hale Ho’ike’ike closed until further notice.

* Maui Ocean Center closed until further notice.

• Maui Family YMCA reopens with limited services by appointment.

* Makawao History Museum closed until further notice.

• Habitat for Humanity Maui ReStore reopened with modified hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday. Limited services will be offered by appointment only. This includes service to Habitat’s partner families and home builds. Email info@habitat-maui.org or visit www.habitat-maui.org. ReStore donations will be accepted by appointment only and can be scheduled by calling 242-1140.

* Akaku Maui Community Media offices and production facilities closed to public, with staff available by appointment only. This includes Akaku’s administrative offices, production studio, KAKU radio facility, and upstairs media lab. Appointment requests can be made by calling 871-5554, or emailing info@akaku.org.

* Maui Mediation Services trainings and mediations postponed until further notice.

* Maui Economic Opportunity operating on three-day staggered work week with offices open normal business hours. Kahi Kamali’i open during regular hours Monday to Thursday and closed noon Fridays to allow for deep cleaning. All Head Start remains closed in conjunction with the DOE. * Binhi at Ani Filipino Community Center in Kahului closed until further notice.

• Heritage Hall meeting facilities (hall and conference rooms) reopening June 15. The certified kitchen will remain available for vendors who produce “grab and go” items.

• Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum reopens 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

• Department of Hawaiian Home Lands offices on Maui and Molokai reopen for in-person visits with appointments. Bills may be paid without reservation.

Sports

* Hawaii High School Athletic Association and the Maui Interscholastic League have canceled the spring season.

* High school athletics practices have been called off.

* Maui Marathon on Oct. 11 postponed to April 25, 2021.

* Cycle to The Sun moved from June 27 to Aug. 22.

* Maui No Kai Oi Soccer Tournament July 17-20 at Eddie Tam Complex canceled.

• Xterra World Championships, set for Nov. 8 on the west side, canceled.

Recurring Events

* Friday town parties. All county-sponsored Friday town parties, including Wailuku First Fridays, Lahaina Second Fridays, Makawao Third Fridays, Kihei Fourth Fridays and Lanai Fifth Fridays, have been canceled.

* Maui Swap Meet, Saturdays at UH-Maui College, closed.

* AARP Foundation TaxAide Sites — Kaunoa Senior Center, West Maui Senior Center, Kahului Union Church and Kihei Community Center — closed.

* Maui Academy of Performing Arts suspends educational programming. Dance and drama classes paused until further notice.

* Kaunoa Senior Center programs, classes and activities — including nutrition and leisure-wellness programs — suspended until further notice.

* Liquor Control certification exam and education sessions canceled until further notice. For more information, call the Department of Liquor Control at 243-7753.

* Deer hunting in the Lanai Game Management Area canceled. DLNR hopes to reschedule hunt later this year.

• Hunting lottery for mouflon sheep on Lanai has been canceled by the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife. The usual season will be modified to create a combined season for mouflon sheep and axis deer. Details regarding this modified season will be announced in the coming weeks.

* State hunter education classes are suspended.

* Pacific Cancer Foundation is moving wellness programs and workshops online. For questions and links, call 242-7661.

* Maui County Business Resource Center classes canceled.

• Maui Sunday Market reopens 4 to 8 p.m. Sundays at the Kahului Shopping Center.

• Go Green monthly bulky item recycling event returns June 20 in Lahaina Cannery Mall parking lot by appointment, go to malamamauinui.org/gogreen.

One-Time Events

* Maui Fair, set for Oct 3 to 6 at the War Memorial Complex, canceled.

* Maui Film Festival set for June 17 to 21 is postponed.

• Korean War candlelight memorial June 25 at the War Memorial Gym canceled.

* Art Maui showing at Schaefer Gallery closed.

* State public library system’s Ukulele Lending Program launch event with Jake Shimabukuro and Andrew Molina on March 14 at Kahului Public Library is postponed.

* Yuki Lei Sugimura campaign event March 18 at UH-Maui College’s Paina Dining Room is postponed.

* Maui County Farm Bureau general membership meeting, originally scheduled for March 18 and rescheduled for April 15, has been postponed until further notice.

• Hawai’i Energy Conference, March 18-19 at the MACC, postponed. Livestream event set for July 30.

* Council Member Tasha Kama’s fundraiser March 19 postponed. Tickets may either be submitted for a refund or used for the rescheduled event. For more information or to request a refund, emailtreasurer@kama4council.orgor call (808) 344-7437.

* Kahului Hongwanji Spring Bazaar, March 21, postponed.

* State Senate Ways and Means Committee public briefing on grant-in-aid applications, March 21, UH-Maui College, postponed.

* State Sen. Gil Keith-Agaran fundraiser set for March 24 at Maui Waena Intermediate postponed.

* Aipono Winemaker’s Dinner, March 27, Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa, postponed.

* Maui Preparatory Academy Bozich Center for Athletics and Performing Arts grand opening, March 28, rescheduled for Sept. 12.

* Ho’omau 2020, March 28, tentatively rescheduled for June 27 at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens. Participants should hold on to tickets as they will be honored for the rescheduled date.

* Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce Foundation annual Scholarship Golf Tournament, March 28, rescheduled for July 11.

* Maui Business Brainstomers Masters of Retail Success in Maui, April 1, rescheduled to 5:15 p.m. Aug. 19, Kahili Golf Course. For refunds or to join the rescheduled class, email organizers@ mauibusinessbrainstormers.org.

* County Fair Housing Training, April 3 at UH-Maui College, postponed.

* Malama Maui Nui’s Art of Trash exhibition, April 4 to May 2 at Maui Mall, will go virtual. Deadline for Gallery and Trashion Show submissions extended to April 10; submit online at MalamaMauiNui.org. Interactive virtual gallery will open for one month beginning Earth Day on April 22 on the Malama Maui Nui website.

* Kula Shof*ckuji Shingon Mission rummage sale, April 4, postponed.

* Imua Family Services annual gala fundraiser, The Chinese Lantern Festival – The Red Ball, April 4, has been moved to Aug. 29 at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa.

* Celebration of the Arts, weekend of April 10 at The Ritz Carlton, Kapalua, postponed.

* Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce “Talk Story” networker, April 14, postponed.

* The Maui Chamber Orchestra Music For Brass Quintet online concert April 18 and Spring Concert May 16 and 17 at Iao Theater postponed to a later date to be determined. Tickets held for the concerts will be honored at the rescheduled dates. Once new dates are set, ticket holders who cannot attend on the rescheduled date will be offered a refund or the opportunity to make a donation.

* East Maui Taro Festival, April 25, postponed.

* Royal High Tea fundraiser for Maui Cancer Wellness Retreats, April 26, postponed until further notice. Ticket holders and vendors may contact Dr. Bridget Bongaard, director of Maui Cancer Wellness Retreats, For more information, go to www.mauicancerwellnessretreats.org.

* Maui Matsuri 20th annual event in May canceled.

• St. Joseph Feast, scheduled for May 1-3 at the Makawao church, is canceled. All scrip and presale hamburger tickets sold for 2020 will be honored in 2021. To claim a refund, mail scrip/hamburger presale tickets to St. Joseph Church, 1294 Makawao Ave., Makawao, 96768 along with the sender’s name and a self-addressed stamped envelope.

* 28th Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive by the National Association of Letter Carriers and The National Rural Letter Carriers Association, May 9, has been postponed. Carriers will not be collecting food. Instead, postal patrons are encouraged to make monetary donation to Maui Food Bank, 760 Kolu St. Wailuku 96793 or through mauifoodbank.org.

* The Makawao Hongwanji summer garage sale and bazaar, originally scheduled for July 4-5, and the Makawao Hongwanji bon dance scheduled for July 24-25, have both been canceled. Makawao Hongwanji is not accepting donations for the garage sale at this time.

* 51st Annual Barrio Fiesta May 22-23 rescheduled to Sept. 4-5.

* The Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum Art Contest for students has been postponed until further notice. Any entries submitted so far will be saved and entered in the next contest.

• Maui Economic Opportunity’s “Do What is Right” Gala on June 20, rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. March 6 at the King Kamehameha Golf Club.
